What are backing plates?
A backing plate is a round disc that you attach to your polishing machine. You then click or stick yourpolishing pad onto it using hook-and-loop fastening. A backing plate ensures your pad stays firmly in place and remains flat during polishing, so you get a smooth and even result. It can also help reduce vibrations. These products come in various sizes, depending on the size of your pads and what you plan to do on your car. Backing plates are usually made of sturdy plastic or rubber, with hook-and-loop or a mounting system for your pads.
Why do you need a polishing backing plate?
You need a polishing backing plate to attach your polishing pads firmly and flat to your polishing machine. When you purchase a polishing machine, a plate is included as standard. For the best results, you want to use polishing pads in different sizes. Smaller pads are useful in hard-to-reach areas or where there are lots of curves and contours. Because these pads differ in size and therefore don't fit well on the standard plates, it's recommended to purchase additional backing plates for them.
Which backing plate fits your polishing machine?
Which backing plate fits your polishing machine depends on the size of your pads and the type of thread or mounting system of yourpolishing machine. Many rotary machines use a standard M14 thread, though other systems exist. When choosing backing plates, pay attention to the diameter: a 125 mm version is used with 150 mm pads, while a 70 mm plate works with 100 mm pads. Have doubts?
