What is car wax?

Car wax is a protective layer you apply to your paintwork to strengthen and shield it. Wax acts as a barrier against rain, dirt, bird droppings and other contaminants that can damage your paint. Regular waxing keeps your car looking great for longer and prevents minor damage from setting into the lacquer.

There are several types of wax. First, there's carnauba wax. This is a natural plant-based wax derived from the leaves of the carnauba palm tree, known for its warm, deep shine. Then there are synthetic waxes, which last longer and offer solid protection against sun and rain. Finally, there are hybrid formulas that combine both properties, giving you both a deep shine and long-lasting protection.

There are also pure wax variants that contain no paint cleaner. Before using these products, you'll need to prepare your paintwork with a paint cleaner first. Professional car waxes often contain additional ingredients that nourish the paint and smooth out minor imperfections — leaving you not just with a protective layer, but a mirror-like finish that reflects light beautifully. Choose a wax that suits your car and your goals, and you'll notice the difference straight away.

How do you apply car wax?

Applying car wax starts with clean, dry paintwork. To improve the longevity and shine of the wax, you can clay your car first. This helps the wax bond better and makes it more resistant to dirt.

Apply the wax with a clean hand applicator. Never use an old cloth or T-shirt, these don't spread the product evenly or thinly enough and can cause scratches.

Work in small, circular motions and apply a thin, even layer. Does it feel too thin? That's exactly right! Using too much product only makes it harder to buff off and doesn't give a better result.

Let the wax cure until a light haze forms. Then do a swipe test with your finger. No greasy streak left behind? You're ready to buff.

Use a soft microfibre cloth with light, straight motions. You'll see the shine appear immediately. Work panel by panel to stay organised and make sure you don't miss a spot.

How often should you wax your car?

How often you should wax your car depends on the type of wax and how you use your car. Natural carnauba wax typically lasts four to six weeks, while synthetic wax can provide protection for up to three months. If you park outside or clock up a lot of miles, more frequent waxing is recommended.

The changing seasons also play a role. Before winter, give your car an extra coat to protect against road salt and cold temperatures. After winter, remove any residue and apply fresh wax for the spring months. That way, your car stays well protected and looking its best all year round.
